Getting Around Guyana Just Got Easier
Whether you need a lift across town, a run to the market, or a transfer to Cheddi Jagan International, RideGY connects you with a nearby driver in minutes — straight from your phone. It is Guyana's own ride-sharing app, built by RideGY Inc. specifically for how people move here.
If you have never used a ride-hailing app before, this guide walks you through everything: how to request a ride, what you will pay, how your safety is protected, and how to get started today.
What Is Ride-Sharing, Exactly?
Ride-sharing (or ride-hailing) lets you request a car, bike, or SUV from your phone rather than flagging down a taxi or making phone calls. You tap your destination, see the fare before you confirm, and a nearby driver heads your way. No haggling, no guessing what the trip will cost.
RideGY works the same way — with a local twist. Drivers are Guyanese independent contractors who know the roads, pricing is shown upfront in Guyana dollars, and you can pay in the way that suits you best.
How to Request a Ride: Step by Step
Requesting your first ride takes less than a minute once the app is open.
- Open the RideGY app and enter your pickup location (or let the app use your GPS position).
- Type in your destination — RideGY will calculate the route and show you a fare estimate upfront.
- Choose your vehicle type: Bike (one passenger, the most affordable option), Standard car, SUV, or Premium.
- Confirm the ride. A nearby driver accepts and heads to you — you can watch them approach on the map in real time.
- When the car arrives, check the driver's name, photo, and vehicle details in the app. Ask for the 4-digit PIN and confirm it matches before you get in.
- At the end of the trip, pay by cash, card, or MMG mobile money, and leave a rating for your driver.
What Will It Cost? Understanding RideGY Fares
RideGY uses tiered per-kilometre pricing with a minimum fare, and the fare is always shown before you confirm — so there are no surprises at the end. Prices are in Guyana dollars and adjust with route distance, time of day, and demand.
To give you a rough sense: a short in-town hop in a Standard car might run around GY$1,000–1,500; a trip of about 5 km might be around GY$2,500; and a longer haul of roughly 8 km around GY$3,500. These are illustrative examples only — your actual fare depends on the specific route and conditions at the time. Airport transfers may use a flat rate. A Bike ride will always be cheaper than a Standard car for the same route.
Tips are entirely optional, and if you do tip, every dollar goes directly to the driver. Cancellation or no-show fees may apply if you cancel after a driver has already set off to meet you.
Payment Options
RideGY accepts cash, credit or debit card, and MMG mobile money. You choose your payment method before or after the ride — whichever fits your habit. Because the fare is shown upfront, you will always know exactly what you are paying before you tap confirm.
Safety Features Built In
RideGY was designed with safety at the centre, not as an afterthought. Every driver goes through a review and approval process before they can accept a single trip — you will never be matched with someone who has not been vetted.
Once you are matched, the app gives you the driver's name, photo, vehicle make, colour, and licence plate so you can confirm the right car before you get in. The 4-digit PIN is an extra checkpoint: you (or the driver) read it out to confirm the match.
During your trip, your route is tracked live. The share-my-trip feature lets you send a family member or friend a link so they can follow your journey in real time — a handy option for late-night travel or unfamiliar areas. Riders can also indicate a preference for a female driver. If anything goes wrong, the app has in-app reporting, and in a genuine emergency, call 911 first.
After every trip, both riders and drivers rate each other. That two-way rating system keeps the platform accountable and helps maintain quality on both sides.
Where Does RideGY Operate?
RideGY is available across all of Guyana. The app matches you with the nearest available driver wherever you are — from Georgetown and the Demerara-Mahaica region to the Berbice corridor and beyond. As with any ride-sharing platform, availability is densest where driver supply is highest, and that grows as more drivers join the network.
If you are ready to skip the hassle of finding a taxi and get a quoted fare before you even step outside, download the RideGY Android app at ride.gy/download. iOS is on the way. Your first ride is just a tap away.
